Pecking At Violets
a triparshva renku for John Carley (1955-2013)

pecking at violets,
what to give you
mother sparrow?

Kito, tr. John Carley

musing on spring
I unfold a writing sheet

Buson, tr. jec

in the lingering dusk
traces still visible
on the wall

Norman Darlington

from beyond it, sounds
of music and water

Chris Drake

a crusted pier
points to where
the moon just was

Moira Richards

standing still, the griffin
in autumn dawn sunshine

nd

***

his yard of ale
snatching fool’s gold
from a hornbeam hedge

mr

six hours in this garden
and still no exit

cd

perhaps a threesome
before the fall with our
brazen serpent?

nd

part these seas, Mo darlin'...
crash us a crescendo

mr

they come running
across the field shouting
help, love's after us!

cd

honour and tradition lost
in this new dispensation

nd

white flowers
for her, the teenage goth
kicked to death

mr

the sound of autumn itself
in her still-warm ear

cd

reflected gently
on a voyager's grass pillow
the moon's radiance

nd

waking in a crowded place
beside a pair of deer

cd

***

the poet
reckons the beats
in his hokku

mr

too early or too late
we shiver neath the snow

nd

hot tears fall
from angels choosing
entrants to heaven

cd

a mad monk wagers
three springs more

mr

blow, cherry petals,
blow -- till your fine trees
beg for mercy!

cd

words swirling ungently
far beyond their keyboard
