Morning Prayer

At dawn I wander the garden. Above the tree line the sky brightens lavender and pink, before it blues, before the sun rises and the full wishing-moon pales. I hold a stone’s tranquil weight in my hand. Close my eyes.

A quiet wind breathes through the lilacs. I am steeped in the fragrance. Yet the flowers remain sturdily tethered to their branches. I thank the universe for learning how to pray, for the morning, for another day and another and another after cancer.
