I stand in a corner of the basement my father reinforced with cinder block as a fallout shelter and that mother stocked with cans of soup. Had the war come, as they surely felt it would, we’d have been forced to eat salty provisions in one another’s company for days on end . . . that is, wildly assuming we survived the initial blast.
