Rattle of Small Coins

short days . . .
a raven picks over
the frozen ground

Jo

after wiping his feet
he stamps them on the doormat

Andre

the long gone taste
of mum’s lemon pie
recalled in a cafe

Patricia

at the dementia ward’s door
she asks me the code

Rodney

rising
through the jacaranda
this blue moon

Andre

he wakes to birdsong
and the glitter of frost

Jo

smoke
from the incinerator
drifts past bare elms

Rodney

Sinatra sings our love song
on an old record

Patricia

a boy’s breath
through harmonica reeds,
his three note serenade

Jo

something she meant to say
a button missing from his shirt

Andre

at the superdome
eyes search the night sky
for a nebula

Patricia

white cloud on blue
behind one hand his smile

Rodney

through a glass
of gin & tonic
the summer moon

Andre

a ball of baby tiger snakes
twined in his hat

Jo

a mudlark
pecks bugs from a signboard
above the bistro

Rodney

rattle of small coins
in an outstretched hand

Patricia

daisies
as though spilled
from his pocket

Jo

a special trip out of town
to view new-born lambs

Andre

spring shadows
on the stepping stones
across the river

Patricia

magpies carolling
by an open window

Rodney

when she strokes
those bare knuckles
his fist softens

Andre

fingers rippling
over the skins

Jo

the syncopated beat
of hailstones
on the roof in a gale

Rodney

along a country lane
horses' hoof prints in the mud

Patricia

with self-sown potatoes
the rusty bit
from an old bridle

Rodney

on a leather thong
the lodestone she gave him

Jo

watching a movie
in the cinema's backseats
my hand in his

Patricia

at the petrol station
she bumps into an old flame

Andre

chilled tonight
by a sphere in shadow
on a slice of moon

Rodney

leaves from a neighbour's oak
fall in both our gardens

Patricia

through dark earth
the lights of autumn
crocuses

Andre

aurora australis
cascading over the ice rim

Jo

family dinner
the almost empty
wine bottle

Patricia

following them upstairs
the aroma of strong coffee

Andre

waves
of sweet aniseed
beside the road

Jo

leaving heady blooms down south
we fly north to their fall

Rodney
