Volunteer

My hosts want cars and clothes and fancy phones.
Yet they are uncertain, beyond the rewards of
a salary, why they do what they do. Change?
Peace?
Love?

sharing
a pot of rooibos
long way round

The children will not leave the school grounds, afraid
that I will disappear. As I must. The siren sounds
a second time, the dust settles.

farewell
a chorus
wavers

I love much about this place. Yet there is too much
politics. Too much superstition. Too much need,
want and greed. And the foreigner here remains
forever the outsider.

my return
a promise
worth keeping?
