In January 2010, six months after
I’d started writing tanka, I discovered a
website for Tanka Canada and encountered the
name, Kozue Uzawa for the first time. After
reading a selection of poems from the affiliated
journal which Kozue has been editing since 2005,
I decided to join Tanka Canada and submit some
poems for possible publication in GUSTS.
I received a warm email welcome from Kozue and,
within a few days, found a complimentary copy of
GUSTS in my mailbox. After sitting down
to enjoy some lovely tanka from countries all
over the world, I was hooked!
To my knowledge, GUSTS is the only
English-language journal that publishes tanka
chosen by a selection committee, rather than by
a single editor. Although it’s always
encouraging to have an individual consider our
work worthy of publication, it’s even more
rewarding to have one of our tanka selected, in
a blind-review process, by a team of talented
editors.
We, at A Hundred Gourds, are grateful to
Kozue for taking time to provide us with so much
information, as well as photographs. We wish her
well as she continues to promote the publication
and enjoyment of English-language tanka in her
adopted country.
