Toasting The Night

toasting the night
as though nothing else matters
autumn rain

a lantern's glow
drifts towards tomorrow

the river boat
collecting all these faces
only once

we pause midway across
the Passerelle des Arts

beneath the iron moon,
cold rust stills the lines
of Motor City

red or black, the ball's sound
spinning against the wheel

butterflies and yearning
a-whirl in my heart -
a letter from you

two on a porch swing
in a lilac breeze

immune to her advances,
he just seems so

grazing till they get close
it gallops off

under the bloom
of a princess tree,
a barefoot gypsy girl

cloud upon cloud,
our castle in the sky
