Old Cockleburs

silent country drive
it was the pink thistle
that made me smile

Bette

a yellow finch
precariously lands

Aubrie

dappled light
on a dirt road
the clouds looks iffy

Terri

in from the field
cows wait at the gate

Bette

tractor tires
track mud
all over the lawn

Aubrie

paw marks
the cat's last life

Terri

window sheers
part the sweetgrass breeze
a baby's cry

Bette

we dip rhubarb stalks
in raw sugar cane

Aubrie

twenty foot jump
from the river bridge
buck nekkid

Terri

the shadow of Venus
in a shoebox pinhole

Bette

ex-lover's footsteps
echo on the back
porch steps

Aubrie

old cockleburs plucked
from a mohair sweater
