Claudia Coutu-Radmore - Canada

On the Banks of the Assiniboine

The Golden Boy is way up there at the top of the Manitoba Legislature Building. What I remember of the tour is that His Bronzeness weighs five tons, that in 1916 he survived the German shelling of the Paris foundry. Early in 1918 he was lowered into the hull of a French wheat ship that was immediately commandeered for troop transport. He completed several dangerous crossings until he arrived in Halifax in 1919.

I sit on the lawn now and look up to him, seventeen feet from his toes to the top of his torch. Gilded in 1951 with 23.5 carat gold, he almost flies into Manitoba’s blue skies. I’ll always remember that he was modelled after a 16th century statue of Mercury by someone whose name sounds like boloney. Have to look that up on Google
