Following the Narrow Road

Retracing Basho's journey I come to Hojin-no-ie, a border crossing guardhouse. On a dismal night, Basho sought shelter here. I notice in the museum a replica of his flimsy grass sandals. Seated by the fireside I am told that I have selected the very place chosen by Basho. A large black-encrusted kettle is suspended above the fluttering embers, alight since 1689.
