Between Heaven and Earth

The shoe was found hidden between the dusty attic rafters in our farmhouse. We were told it was a leftover from the ancient custom of sacrifice, carried out when building a house. Sometimes a small animal would be bricked up or a live tree was tied to the roof beams, as an appeasement to local spirits. Items of clothing, usually a shoe or boot, are simply a pale shadow of this long-forgotten custom.
